Rev + Dear Brother,
After a good deal of doubt / as [^ to] our last meeting concerning the best / and proper mode of inviting your to / fill the vacancy, the Vestry requested / me to proffer the invitation. They / exprefsed themselves very much pleased / with my selection, and desirous to / make your temporary connection with / the Parish as pleasant as the / circumstances could permit. The / chief difficulty to which I referred / occurs from the impropriety of the Vestry / appointing an Afsistant Minister as / I desired, while their expenses overrun / their income, and an application / for aid is before the Vestry of [?/- trinity?]
[END OF PAGE 1]
However, I am sure you will / do me the favor almost as readily / as you would the Vestry - and I / hope therefore that you will consent / to perform such Parish duties as / may be convenient for you in the / Parish of the Church of the Ascension / for six months from and after / Easter Day next. The compensation / which certain friends authorize me / to offer is not what I would have / desired, but is I believe as much / as under the circumstances the Church / can afford. It may be of some / service to you. It is five hundred / dollars.
If you will afsent to the / proposal, please send me word by / the bearer. Sincerely Yr friend + Brother
G. T. Bedell
