83 My dear Willie, I’ve
returned / from the mountains on / Saturday to find / the bad news of poor / Charles
Waverly s death / This has given me / a double set back / [Inside Page] first
because I liked him as a man / and then because he was a right- / for me in
acting. He knew me so well, / if I made an alteration of technical / business
at night he had an intuition / that seemed to anticipate me. Now I am rehearsing
another actor / who though’ careful and cautious will I / fear fall far short of
poor Charly for / my purpose. If Monday is hot and / you are tired don’t
come. Rip is such / [Last Page] an old story
that / there is nothing to say / of it. Joe is better / I hope you are all /
well at the Island./ I wish you
could / have been here this / week but I am / in the train at 9 in / the
morning and / don’t get out till / [First Page; Crossed writing] seven. We are going to see / Barrett
in “Da R[unrecovered]” on / Friday. Shall
have a lot come / if you can/ [Mr J Jones] [unrecovered words]/ JoeTranscriber
