Dear Mr. Delafield, /
A letter I wrote / to you some time ago has / never been answered, & I fear never / reached you, as letters are sometimes / unaccountably lost. I therefore / write again hoping to be more fortunate. /
The Barton book cases you / have been so kind as to allow / me to store at Montgomery Place / and which are still there & crated / – I now wish to request you to consider / as part of yr inheritance, & to keep / and make use of. It would be im-/ possible to find a home for them in small / modern apartments with low ceilings. /
PAGE 2
Mr. Barton had them made in / Philadelphia by skilled cabinet-/ makers, some seventy or more years / ago, of American Oak which turns / black with time & is therefore con- / sidered more valuable & like / English Oak – he chose the / designs from Historical drawings/ of pure Gothic, & superintended / every detail of ornamentation. /
These book cases were always / much admired & contained his most / valuable & beautiful books, until/ Mrs. Barton sold his collection to/ the Boston Public Library, a / short time before her death in the / spring of 1873. I have always / prized them - but my life is so/ changed, that I can never enjoy them & /

and I venture to hope you will / gratify me by a favourable answer / to this request. /
I beg you will give my / kind regards to Mrs. Delafield / who is I trust well. Your sons / too I hope are well & that you will / all enjoy this summer at / beautiful Montgomery Place. /
My widowed sister in law / is now a helpless invalid & very / old. We have been living together / in the winter for three years. /
With best wishes, believe me to be /
Very sincerely yours, /
Julia Barton Hunt
