Text reads as follows:
Julia Barton Hunt to John Ross Delafield
August 26, 1921
a.
Montgomery Place /
August 26th /
1921
Dear Mr. Delafield, /
I have yr last / letter of the 24th & can find / no words to express my deep / appreciation of yr wish to / have me remain during / the rest of my life & that / yr father should have had the / same generous thought touches / me to the heart. Few natures / are capable of such disinterested / wishes & actions!
(Section on left side of crease on Page 1) :
You will find me ready to give you every / information when / you can come.
PAGE 2
I thank you a thousand times & will / always cherish the remembrance / of yr kindness. But it is not / possible to accept. I / must leave & change my manner / of life. I could not afford / to live here alone & do justice / to myself or to the estate. / I am old – nearly seventy seven / & the cares would prove too heavy. / You must take possession of the beautiful place with / its associations, & will I hope / long enjoy & value it with yr /

Wife & children. It has been a / great privilege for me, to have lived / here so many years with those / dear to me. May you love / it in time as I have, & feel a just / pride in its history. /
Perhaps you will find / it well to come up & make / arrangements with the farmer - / Julius Bloch – he has been farmer / here for three years – “on shares” - / half & half has proven himself / capable, honest & industrious. He / has a good wife & large family, & is a poor / man. /
PAGE 4
You would find it difficult to replace / him. The horses & cows with one / exception belong to him. I would / also recommend to you Gilbert / Bathrick & wife, who have lived with us 24 years. Gilbert is very / honest & reliable & capable. / When absent he has had charge of / the house & care of the place. He could not be replaced! Good men in his class up here are very / scarce. There are also two men / in the garden & grounds you might / like to employ when I leave.
I fear I will have to take more / time than I supposed for removal. / Very sincerely & gratefully /Yrs/
Julia Barton Hunt
