Dear Mr. Delafield,
I accept with / much pleasure & appreciation / the portrait you are so / thoughtful as to send me. / Mrs. Cora Livingston Barton / was as another Mother to me / & her portraits have been very dear to me through life & / the one taken when she was / eight years old by Benjamin / West has been a special favourite. /
It will be greatly prized I can / assure you.
PAGE 2
When the book of which you / write in yr note of Oct 21st comes / I will do what I can to give / you the information you desire / about what is at Montgomery Place. /
In a former note your asked / me about a sword & gun you have found in the trunk room. / I know nothing of the gun & / think the sword must have / been worn at Court functions in / France by either Edward Livingston / or Mr. Barton, who was left as / Charge ‘ d’affaires in France when / Franco- American differences /
PAGE 3
Recalled Mr. Livingston to Washington. /My great-uncle – Major Davezac - / was also in diplomacy & charge ‘ / d’affaires to the Hague & to Naples. / Might not one of the swords have / been his? Mr. Barton was his / executor. Both Edward Livingston / & Major Davezac were at the / Battle of New Orleans. Could these / swords have been connected with / that period? I really do not know! / I do not think I ever heard them / talked about by those who are gone. / The only sword I am informed about / is that of Genl. Richard Montgomery / which has come to me, strangely / enough!
PAGE 4
I am sure you & Mrs. Delafield / are enjoying this beautiful / day in the changing October / foliage always so wonderful / on the Hudson & at Montgomery. / With kind regards, / sincerely yours / Julia Barton Hunt
