December 1st /
1921 /
Dear Mr. Delafield, /
I have your / Note of November 28th. / The cocked hats you found in / an old trunk of the Attic / at Montgomery, were part of / the livery worn by the servants / of Edward Livingston when / Minister to France. These / things were preserved in the Attic / by Mrs. Livingston & Mrs. Barton & / also by my sister, / brother & myself. /
PAGE 2
The squirrels, who in some / way have always had access / to the Attic lumber & trunk rooms / have frequently made their / Nests in these relics, & durbtless / destroyed more than what you / found. It is some years/ since I last looked at the / remains of the liveries. /
With the regard to the / other matter about which you / enquire – I would say that quicklime has been always used / freely & found adequate / upon earth. /
MIDDLE OF PAGE
In Mrs. Montgomery’s time & even up to 1860 – There / was no bathroom, & water only in the kitchens. Mrs. Barton / introduced water in the 2nd story. /
PAGE 3
There is no cesspool. The / water from the well is is (sic) carried by pipes under / ground to the (illegible word) wood & / there empties into a ravine / which slopes down to the / River. Quick lime is also / used in the ravine. /
At the tennant (sic) houses, I have / frequently been able to supply all the farms with Cisterns. I / paid this, & think, ten dollars/ each time. Such arrange / ments on an on old place are (four illegible words) left to a Superintendnt / or head gardener. /
PAGE 5
The present tank & plumbing sinks in kitchens & pantry, such / as the waterfall & rains wills /
appliance for watering cattle / & filtering water of cisterns for / the farmers family – were / all put in by my brother. / At the farms (illegible word) rock had / to be blasted so as to put the / water pipes four feet underground / to avoid freezing in severe winters. /
With kind regards /
Sincerely yours,/
Julia Barton Hunt
