Philad’a 14 July 1819 Dear Sir I shall publish the 2d No of Sal = / =magundi next Saturday + the 3d of Satur = / day the 31st Inst. You give notice on the / [??] of the Sketch Book that the 2d No. / will be published on the 1st of August. I / think it would be better for the sale of both / works, if the Sketch Book could be got out / on the Saturday between the 2d + 3d Nos / of Salmagundi _ that’s a week before the / 1st of Aug. or a week after [unto] answer / the same purpose. I should be extremely / glad if my 500 copies of the 2d No could be / sent by the Mercantile Line of Packets / about four days before it is advertised in / [END OF PAGE 1] New York. The transportation [unto?] be so much / lefs than by the stage, and it ought to appear in / both places on the same day. As yet I have / only received 300 copies _ the remainder have been / ship’d but have not arrived. Shall I send you / my not for them? Please write to me as / to the time you determine on publishing the 2d No / that I may mention it in the [co??] of Salmagundi / and Analectic to be printed in a few days. Very respectful Yr ob St M Thomas P.S. A few copies of the 1st No came here thro’ a Book= / seller in N York who bought them from Mr [Wiley]] / I there= / fore want as many to my brother in New York _ Mr W [END OF PAGE 2] Says they did not come here with his knowledge on con = / =sent, and I have no doubt that is the fact. But the / effect was the same as if he had actually sent them / himself - that is, so many copies of his 500 came / into my market, + it was but fair that as many / of mone should go to his. There is no necefsity, however, / for any clashing or interference, as we can each no / doubt dispose of our portions in time. I don’t / mention the circumstance as a complaint against / him; and, indeed, if he has not mentioned it to me / [page torn] need not say anything to him about [you] / I may pofsibly [?? ?? ??] before the 2d No / comes out – MT [END OF PAGE 3] Phil: 14 July 1819 M Thomas [POSTAGE STAMP - red ink, circle] PHIL 15 JUL [POSTMARK - red ink] 12 [?] [ADDRESS] Henry Brevort Jr Esq New York
