My dear William,
This is a sort of jubilee in the city at present occasioned by Old Hickory’s arrival. He landed at the garden (no use of a history as you have it in the papers father intends sending you) and just after he left the bridge, it gave way and occasioned a small wet to some of the honorable secretaries, viz. Governor Cass, McLane, and Woodbury. Uncle Wash is jaunting about with him (Hickory). He goes to Gouvernor Kemble’s tomorrow per st boat and may return by land to Oscar’s. The Guns are now firing away announcing the arrival of Black Hawk and gent who with the president go to the garden this afternoon to see the balloon ascension, and in consequences the crowd on the Battery is immense already (3 p.m.) and seems more like the 4th of Juy tha anything else – cake carts and shanties about the railing of the Battery, firing of crackers, etc.
We are cleaning house and I heartily wish I were out of the way. Theo goes up in the wagon alone tomorrow at Oscar’s The Vandenburghs of Troy have been in town several days and are going to Tarrytown tomorrow. They will have to stay at Mrs. White’s as there is no room where Aunt Paris is; Edgar has taken them in charge and goes up with them.
I had a chat yesterday with Mr. Russell and found him very agreeable. He called to see uncle W to introduce him to eh t president and to get him to visit Middletown, but Uncle was out and he wished me to o with him to hunt him up. I went with him several places bur did not succeed in finding him. I have just received a few lines from Pierre; his family is well but he did not know when he would be in town . There are some Irvings from Charlestown here. Theo dines with then today and I doubt if he has time to write you by this vessel.
We send a box and bundle to you by this vessel [I fear the] boots will be too large.
Yours affectionately,
Sanders
P.S. Excuse a few lines as there is no news since you left.Other Names and Numbers
