My dear Scott _
I beg leave to introduce to your acquaintance Mr / Washington Irving whose literary + personal characters I / think from his intimacy with Mr Brevort are probably known / to you by reputation __ If it should not be so I can / make no other apology for introducing him as my friend to / you than that I reserve it as the last kindnefs which I / can show to a friend who I truly esteem at [parting] them [^ to] / make him acquainted with you __ The number of my / friends to who I have shown this [??-ssession] of my / regard has not I believe seem’d to make me a trouble = / =some correspondent _ but I ought most cordially to / thank you for the repeated attention which you have / shown to my introductions _ If I were [diposed] to take / an unfair advantage of your patience I could indeed con = / =trive to be very troublesome _ for I have occasion to refuse / a letter to you about once a month _ but it is not once / in years that I met a man like my good friend / Washington Irving + I rejoice that he will be grateful / with the sight of a man of genius whom he admires / with the enthusiasm of a cultur’d mind through / the means of (my dear Scott) your sincere + grateful friend
