Sunnyside May 28 1859 My Dear Sir The ivy which overruns a part of my house is from Melrose Abbey and was given me by the late Mrs Jane Renwick, (mother of Professor Renwick) who planted it [at the] with her own hands. She was a Scottish lady of uncommon merit and who when in her fifteenth year was celebrated by Burns in one of his songs as "The Blue eyed Lassie" I can promise you nothing con cerning Scott. Indeed I have given to the public all my recollections of him, and am just now obliged to abstain as much as pos- -sible from the exercise of the pen being as yet imperfectly recovered from a nervous indisposition that has hung about me for some time past Yours very truly Washington Irving S. Austin Allibone Esq. Washington Irving May 1859 250-/GAA'88 Washington Irving
