MAKING APPLE WHISKEYEntry/Object ID
L.2012.231Description
Residents of the Hudson River Valley relied on local resources for industry, whether it was fish, lumber, water power--or apples. Instead of the more common corn- or rye-basedn liquor, the whiskey known as "apple-jack" made in Rockland County stills resulted from apple mash and the adbundant local supply of fruit. Almost all of the alcohol produced locally was also consumed locally, since apple jack was a "rarity" in metropolitan barrooms, as the accompanying text for this image states.Turning produce into alcohol was one way to easily transport perishable goods, but it seems the bottles of amber-colored liquid never traveled far from the stills that " transform[ed] the apple that intoxicated Eve into the liquor which intoxicates..."
Engraving of workers making whiskey inside barn; figure tends fire in brick furnace at center; metal pipes extend above and behind furnace; brick chimney at rear; worker at bottom right covers steaming barrel; figure at center carries jug; figures at bottom left with glasses in hand; at bottom right, printed (monogram in image): "JB"; at bottom center, title, printed: "MAKING APPLE WHISKEY.--SCENE AT A STILL IN OPERATION IN ROCKLAND COUNTY, NEW YORK.--SKETCHED BY J. BECKER.--SEE PAGE 127."; at left edge, printed, from bottom, "NOVEMBER 1, 1873.]", "FRANK LESLIE'S ILLUSTRATED NEWSPAPER.", "125"; text on verso.Made/Created
