Chapter I
First arrival of Columbus in Spain
The first trace we have of Columbus in Spain / is gathered from the manuscript documents / of the celebrated law suit, which took place / a few years after his death, between his son / Don Diego and the Crown. It is contained in / the deposition of one Garcia Fernandez, a / physician, resident in the little sea port / of Palos de Moguer, in Andalusia. The / humble entrance of Columbus hits a country / that was to rebound with his fame and / to be aggrandized by his discoveries, is / one of the most striking and instructive / incidents in his eventful story /
About half a league from Palos, o0n / solitary heights, overlooking the sea coast / and surrounded by a straggling forest of / pine trees, there stood, and continues to standCollection
