Memorandum of an agreement made this seventh day / of February, A.D. 1839 between Washington Irving of the first / part and Lewis Gaylord Clark and Clement M. Edson, / proprietors and publishers of the Knickerbocker maga= / zine under the firm of Clark + Edson of the second part: /
The said Washington Irving for the consideration here= / after mentioned doth promise and agree to and / with the said Clark + Edson that he will during / the term of one year to commence from March 1st, 1839 / contribute monthly to the said Magazine from his own / pen one or more literary articles, the first of said arti- / cles / to be in readinefs for the March number next _ In / consideration whereof the said Clark + Edson agree to / pay or cause to be paid to the said Washington Ir - / ving the sum of $2000 in equal quarterly payments / of $500 each, they the said Clark + Edson hereby enga= / ging to accept his drafts, or the drafts of his agent Ebe= / nezer Irving for the said quarterly amounts, to bear date / on or about the first day of every quarter + to be payable / three months after date.
It is understood that the said Washington Irving re= / serves to himself the right and privilege of printing and / publishing, or causing the same to be done, hereafter in a / collective form any or all of the articles this to be fur= / nished by him _
In case of any failure on the part of Clark + Edson to ac= / cept + pay the drafts aforesaid, or of Washington Irving to / contribute articles as agreed upon, this contract shall cease / and determine and be no longer of any affect.
