Description

This view of the Hudson by moonlight appeared in the pages of The Aldine, a short-lived art journal respected for its quality typography and engraving. Paul Dixon, an artist known for his landscapes, created the image here. His work was published in numerous periodicals of the time, including The Century and The American Magazine. Here a full moon illuminates the river, the peaks of the Highlands along the shoreline and a sailing ship. The parted clouds add drama and frame a scattering of stars overhead. Engraving of river at night; full moon and stars illuminate night sky; sailboat on river in distance; moonlight reflected on calm water surface; mountains beyond opposite shoreline; trees and riverbank in foreground; at bottom right printed (in image): "BOGERT. SC."; at bottom center, printed: "MOONLIGHT ON THE HUDSON.--PAUL DIXON.".
