Description

Steel engraving entitled : "Morning." "Invented Painted Engrav'd & Published by Wm. Hogarth March 25th.1738 according to Act of Parliament": clock in pediment of St. Paul's facade indicates time 6.55 a.m. Morning wintry and threatening snow; icicles on eaves "Tom King's Coffee House," right, before St. Paul's. Revelry seen through door of King's; bewigged hat flies out toward group recently departed from coffee house. Group composed of two enbracing couples; third man, seated on basket, slumps unconscious. In front of revelers, two women warm themselves at stick fire. At center, studying couples from behind fan, stands thin, spotted-faced, well-dressed woman, carrying ermine muff. She is apparently on way to morning devotions at St. Paul's, followed by reluctant and cold looking foot-boy. In background, market place of Covent Garden, filled with merchants (some of whose wares appear left foreground,) carrying baskets, lanterns, placards, etc., and school children, dawdling along with bags over shoulders. In black-painted 18th c. frame.
