9 1/2" mortarboard mounded on a 6 7/8" head piece. Board and head piece are covered with a black wool fabric. Outside of hat's edge is a shiny black ribbon; on the inside, the hat is lined by a band of tan leather. Inside of head piece is a transparent, moth-eaten black satin with an engraving on it and a business card with John Ross Delafield written on it. Tassels are hanging from the center of the board.
