Curatorial Remarks

Note

Although this piece is in fair condition only, the absolute charm of the design merits the object's accession with this collection of locally-used (and likely made) sewing accessories. This piece, along with the cat thread-minder from the same gift are unique pieces that speak to the individuality of common women's tools for household work; this is a lovely personal token of patriotism and whimsy [Jessa J. Krick, 7/30/2019].

General Note

Note

Donor Jessica Leslie believes that this piece was either from Maria A. Fowler Raymond's collection of family sewing tools used at 116 Washington Street or that it was added to the collection by Caroline Raymond, Maria's daughter. It is possible that it was made by one of the women. Donor noted that there are twelve stars included (which corresponds to no American flag) but noted that both women were educated; this may simply be a case of not working from a pre-designed pattern and the maker trying to fit in stars, as the spacing gets more cramped at the bottom.
