NEW GOVERNMENT LIGHTHOUSE AT TARRYTOWN ON THE HUDSONEntry/Object ID
L.2012.366Description
Built at the behest of ship captains and with funds authorized by Congress, the Tarrytown Lighthouse (also known as the Kingsland Point Light) was completed in 1881. The lighthouse was the first and only caisson-style lighthouse on the Hudson River and housed a fourth-order Fresnel lens at the time of completion. The firm of G. W. & F. Smith of Boston made the prefabricated tower. The lighthouse served as a key tool for Hudson River navigation until 1955 when the Tappan Zee Bridge was completed.
