Description

Some Hudson River Valley landmarks were so distinctive, they were used to advertise businesses far removed from the river's immediate vicinity. This pre-printed stock card, featuring an image and information about the Old Dutch Church in Tarrytown, was probably part of a set of Hudson Valley-themed cards, each printed with a blank area for proprietors to add their own business information. Here, the trade card subject and the business are a bit incongruous: a historic Dutch colonial church is being used to advertise a Paterson, New Jersey, dining establishment where customers ordered oysters and cheap cigars. Advertisement card with engraved image of Old Dutch Church and stamped business information; card divided into two sections; at left, image of church and grounds; above image, printed: "The Dutch Church, / Built in 1699 at Tarrytown,N.Y."; at right side, decorative top border over printed caption: "The famous old Dutch church at Tarrytown, N.Y." / "Erected by Fredrick Philipse and Catharine C Van Courtland, his wife in 1699."; at right, open center area stamped: "J. STORMS, JR., / DINING ROOMS, / Oysters in Every Style. / The Best 5 & 10 cent Cigar. / 11 Fair ST., / Next to Voorhis' Stove Store. / PATERSON, N. J. "
