Description

One of a pair of carcel lamps with chimneys and globes of gilded and patinated brass with cast ornate decoration: colorless glass chimney rests on lamp base; frosted globe with bronze ring at top and bottom, etched pattern of four floral sprays, fits over chinmey and rests on lamp base; tin sheet iron burner, roughly anthemion-shaped collar supports groove; hollow gallery of open arches framed by naturalist shapes and stippled background; brass knob extends through gallery to raise and lower wick; ornate cast urn-shaped element; vertically oriented bands of circles at lip; plain band at neck; bulbous base formed by bee-shaped bosses surrounded by cartouches separated by leafy devices; band of concave ovals at base; fluted column; concave base with band of flattened trefoils tops a series of conjoined ovals with floral band; squared plinth; stepped base of ornate leafy devices and bellflowers; band of geometric c-scrolls at bottom; four highly scrolled feet in relief separated by a cabuchon within a cartouche; curved tin sheet on bottom.

Note

This lamp is missing a stabilizing ring that holds the glass chimney straight (see photo in object file). This piece has always been missing, as far as any current HHV staff knows. Its absence was noted in July 2010, by conservator Scott Merritt, curatorial technician Lauren Bailey and HHV collections manager Jessa J. Krick.
