3/31/1989, James Barber, a researcher from the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., called with info about this painting. He said the painting contains an interesting personal reference to Edward Livingston. While at least two versions include Washington in the background, this version shows ships. Barber believes that this vignette may represent Edward Livingston's negotiations of 1834-1835 with France on behalf of the United States. (The negotiations related to a claim against France for impressing United States seamen during the Napoleonic Wars.) The vignette may well symbolize special thanks from a longtime friend and political associate Andrew Jackson.Note Type
