Description

Like the Catskill Mountain House, the Palisades Mountain House catered to a well-to-do clientele. The large hotel, located in Englewood Cliffs, had its own steamboat dock and access via road and footpath. Guests enjoyed the view from its porticos and balconies, as well as the grounds and hiking paths. Built and run by a syndicate of wealthy investors, the hotel was managed by David Hammond, who also operated several leading hotels in Manhattan. Fire claimed the structure in 1884. Engraving of large hotel at edge of cliff; five story building with covered porch at front and sides; three flag poles with flags unfurled above roof; rows of windows; cliff at bottom center; river with sailboat at bottom right; at bottom center, printed: "W.TREADWELL, ENG.", "PALISADES MOUNTAIN HOUSE.--D.S. HAMMOND, PROPRIETOR.", "Half hour from New York. Mountain Air, Charming Scenery."; text on verso, a list of Manhattan landmarks.
