Black and white image of elderly woman seated in chair, wearing black floor-length dress with long sleeves: white fabric (shawl-like) with wide lace border around woman, round white fabric headpiece with lace piece down back of head; view of interior room shows table on viewer's right with embroidered tablecloth, framed male portrait on top of table, dark blur of a piece of furniture in room's corner, has two white candles in candlesticks, a silver unidentifiable object and a blurry photograph on top of it; ornately patterned upholstery with carved wooden frame on chair woman is sitting on, cut-out design at top of back of chair, two ornately patterned rugs evident on floor; white mat board border, 1 3/4" white border with double band design around image, signed by artist in pencil: "Cowles"; backside, written in pencil: "For Morgan from Mother, 82 years/Mrs. Wm. R. Grinnell, Charlotte Van Wart Irving, youngest niece of Washington Irving" and "4342".
