PICKING HUCKLEBERRIES FOR THE NEW YORK MARKETEntry/Object ID
L.2012.259Description
Huckleberries grow wild in the Hudson River Valley, unlike other berries have been cultivated and harvested from farm fields since the mid-19th century. The Hudson provided an effiicent means of transporting wild berries to the city far to the south. While the finest and juciest huckleberries grew in the mountainous regions of Ulster County, rather than in wetland areas like the one shown in this illustration, this image from a British peridical shows how women participated in the the berry harvest. The New York Times estimated over 10,000 men, women and children would pick berries in the Hudson River Valley during the three-week huckleberry harvest in July 1897, just a few berry seasons after this image appeared.
Engraving of women harvesting wild berries: women, holding baskets, stand in knee-deep pond and pick berries from plants; figures wearing dresses with hats or other head coverings; dense vegetation and trees surround water; at bottom center, printed: "PICKING HUCKLEBERRIES FOR THE NEW YORK MARKET."; at left edge printed from bottom: "SEPTEMBER 16, 1890.]", "ONCE A WEEK.", "5"; text on verso.Made/Created
