PICKING RASPBERRIESEntry/Object ID
L.2007.256Description
Raspberries were among the fruits cultivated along the Hudson. According the New York Tribune in the summer of 1879, a daily berry boat ran from the village of Highland near Poughkeepsie to the city, "and the large night steamers are now taking out immense loads of raspberries from the river towns every evening, having at times nearly 2,000 bushels on board."
As this illustration shows, men and women were involved in the harvest. Women wore sunbonnets and long fingerless gloves to product themselves from the sun as much as they could, since pale skin was considered a mark of class and respectability. Although berry-picking was a way for women to earn some money, it was not easy work, or easy to negotiate gender dynamics as this image appears to indicate.
