Note

When presented to HHV, the object bore a label from David M. Parsons: "Picturesque Views -- Near Fishkill -- Hudson River" James and Ralph Clews Staffordshire, England, c. 1829-1836 From Plate No XVI, "View Near Fishkill," from "The Hudson River Portfolio," by John Hill and William Guy Wall, c. 1821-1828 Presented to Historic Hudson Valley on June 16, 2016 by David M. Parsons, a great, great grandson of James Clews, upon his retirement as Director of Finance & Administration Image on the plate is taken from Plate 16 "View Near Fishkill" of The Hudson River Port Folio, also in the collection of Historic Hudson Valley. Similar pieces from this set of stoneware were on loan from a dealer (Post Road Gallery of Larchmont, New York) and included The Hudson River Port Folio exhibition at Boscobel in Summer-Fall 2014, in a show which included HHV's bound edition of the work. A image of a platter from the set is included in the catalog (and according to David, the same platter was included in the Art & The Empire City exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art). A similar plate is in the collection of Winterthur. These plates were made with blue-and-white and black-and-white transfer decoration, with the black-and-white being of earlier manufacture.
