Note

Acquired in 2003, cataloged later. Gift notes from Jean Mason Browne identify the sitter as Pierre Van Cortlandt, III. According to the Frick Museum Digital Collections (a project to make digital the Frick's vast picture library), this painting was originally in a different frame (see Object File for b/w image) and was recorded as in the collection of Jean Mason Brown in the 1950s. Notes include provenance information (see Object File) and the following: "The artist was a friend of the subject and often came to his home. Pierre Van Cortlandt III was the only child of Pierre Van Cortlandt II by his second wife, Anne Stevenson, daughter of John Stevenson and Magdalen Douw of Albany. He was born in 1815 and died in 1884. He married Catharine Elizabeth Beck, daughter of Dr. Theodoric Romeyn Beck and Harriet Caldwell in 1836." [Jessa J. Krick, Associate Director of Collections, 7/25/2019].
