Condition

Notes

Remarks: The painting is abraded along the left edge. There are also several areas of lifting paint with associated losses at bottom right. The lifting paint will be consolidated with sturgeon glue. The losses will be filled with Flugger fill material. The fills and the abrasion will be retouched with watercolor and MS2A. There are also local losses in the frame that will be consolidated with sturgeon glue and retouched with watercolor. (Condition analysis and treatment proposal: Shawn Digney-Peer)

Curatorial Remarks

Note

Dating, of c. 1815, arrived at by comparison with the portrait done in that year (according to a receipt (VC.59.725) signed by Ames of the second Mrs. Pierre Van Cortlandt II (VC.58.1, A-B). Very likely that the two were executed at about the same time.
