Japanned plate with black background has decoration in form of scene of four Chinese men standing and sitting in garden: plate has rather steeply inclined sides; garden scene is rendered in gilt except for flesh-colored faces
and hands; garden includesd various types of foliage, water and two garden structures; border design of flowing feather-like devices interspersed with five-petalled flowers is edged on either side by a wide and narrow band of gilt; break in border suggests use of stencil.
