Note

The image on this plate is one of the rare depiction of a enslaved person in the collection of HHV. The use of a enslaved child or "servant" as a fashionable "accessory" in portraiture in Dutch and English portraits carries over to this Deflware plate. See also Largillierre's Portrait of a Woman and an Enslaved Servant at the MMA (1696) or Verelst's The Family of Elihu Yale at the Yale Center for British Art (c. 1719) or Mignaud's The Duchesss of Portsmouth (1682) in the National Gallery, London, and many many others [Jessa J. Krick, Assoc. Director of Collections, 6/21/2021].
