Description

Platter of white glazed stoneware or heavy porcelain having a four lobed shape with two handles and gold decoration. The sides are serpentine and are approximately equal in length. There are two handles opposite one another on two sides, they have oval carrying openings of approximately 1" x 2 1/4" and are surrounded by stylized foliage in gold. In the center of each side that does not have a handle there is an oval cartouche flanked by two leaves. The rim has a 1/4" gold band all around, which is incorporated into the other decoration where they intersect. Where the rim begins to move upward from the flat surface of the platter is a thin gold band that echoes the shape of the piece. There is a circular gold band 2 1/2" in diameter in the center of the platter.

Incised into the back on the unglazed surface are two marks. One is near a handle and resembles a "Q" with the bottom of a script "L" as its tail. The other is near the edge of one lobe and is two short strokes with one short perpendicular stroke crossing them. Rubbings of the marks are on the catalog worksheet in the file.
