PLOUGHING AND STORING ICE ON THE HUDSON RIVER, NEW YORK
Entry/Object ID
L.2012.258
Description
This image shows another step of the ice-harvesting process on the Hudson River. After workers determined the depth of the ice and cleared snow from the surface, they used horse-drawn equipment, often called ploughs, to mark out uniform slabs. These were then cut and guided through open channels to the ice house where they were easily stacked with the help of mechanized elevator ramps. The row of towering ice-houses along the shoreline gives a sense of the scale of the industry. In this scene, however, the artist has taken some license with the setting. Most harvesting was completed at night when air temperatures were at the coldest.
Colored engraving of ice workers on frozen river; horses pull cutting plows to scribe rectangles in ice of foreground; workers with poles dislodge and push ice blocks in open water at center; ice moved to ramps of storage building at top center; large warehouse building at edge of river; dog and figures at bottom right; additional buildings along edge of river; mountain slope behind buildings; at bottom left, printed (in image): "LUMLEY DEL"; at bottom center, printed: "PLOUGHING AND STORING ICE ON THE HUDSON RIVER, NEW YORK."; text on verso.
