Description

Etching and engraving of a large group of people in a forest surrounding a platform: on the left of the scene, one figure stands and seven sit on a covered rustic platform, raised about fifteen feet from the ground; a ladder leans against the back of the platform; a figure sits on the ground beneath the platform; another figure leans against one of the supporting poles; a large group surrounds the platform; some figures sit on the ground, some sit on chairs, and others stand; all seem to be listening to the figure standing on the platform; nearly all the figures wear a hat; three tents and smoke are visible behind the group; trees surround the entire scene; the image is surrounded by a border of four lines close together; above the image in center is printed "ÉTATS UNIS. ESTADOS UNIDOS [United States]"; on far right is printed "31"; below the image on far left is printed "Milbert del"; below is printed the title in French, "Prédication des Anabaptistes. [Anabaptist Sermon]"; on right is printed the title in Spanish, "Predicacion delos Anabatistas".

Prédication des Anabaptistes is plate 31 number in "Etats-Unis d'Amerique", first published by Frimin Didot Freres in Paris in 1837. This book, written by Jean B.G. Roux de Rochelle, was illustrated with engraving and etchings of the works of various artists, including Jacques Milbert. This book was republished in Germany by E. Schweizerbart's Verlagshandlung as "Vereinigte Staaten von Nord-America" in 1838, in Italy by Antonelli as "Stati Uniti d'America" in 1839, and in Spain by Imprenta del Guardia Nacional as "Historia de los Estados-Unidos de America" in 1841.
