Curatorial RemarksNote
Source of this engraving is unknown, likely a book illustration. Although this engraving is "after Gilbert Stuart Newton"; it is not after the Gilbert Stuart Newton portrait in the HHV collection (SS.62.1). In that portrait, which is dated to 1830, Irving is leaning on one elbow and is not wearing a fur-trimmed garment. "Newton captured Irving's likeness on at least three occasions. Irving greatly admired a portrait Newton at executed during May, 1820, and held it up as a paradigm when discussing a proposed portrait with Leslie later that year. Newton also created a portrait of the writer for his English publisher, John Murray." (Visions of Washington Irving, cat. no. 20, p. 76). [Jessa J. Krick, Collections Manager, 4/27/2017].Note Type
