A six page rent roll for Frederick Philipse's Estate in the Province of New York, c. 1785. Although the list contains two docks in New York City, many of the names are familiar to today's Westchester residents. Archer, Buckhout, Birdsel, Garrison, Merrit, Odell, Purdy, Storm and Tompkins/Thompkins have lived on through descendants as well as street, town and regional names. After the Revolution, all of the 52,000 acre Philipse estate went up for sale - how many tenants were able to then purchase their land?Collection
