Curatorial RemarksNote
Although object itself has no indication of date or maker, source (online vendor specializing in fruit crate labels) dated this to the 1920s. Probably intended for New York State apple vendors. Clear reference to Rip Van Winkle story, including Rip figure in tattered clothes with his gun, Hudson River setting and "odd looking personages" who play nine-pins in Washington Irving's story. Interesting to note that these figures are frequently depicted as elfin in size, while the story makes no mention of this detail, one is called "stout" but none are described as small or dwarf-like [Jessa J. Krick. Associate Director of Collections, 1-29-2018].Note Type
