Description

The Ladies Repository published this engraving, taken after the 1867 painting Hook Mountain on the Hudson River by artist Sanford Robinson Gifford, in 1868. By that time, Gifford was an established artist, one of the Hudson River School painters who traveled the river making sketches which later served as inspiration for their oil paintings. Many of the works by these artists engaged the public and introduced them to the region. Even in this print—a black-and-white version of Gifford's riot of autumnal color—shows his skilled treatment of light. Here dark foliage frames the river vista and Hook Mountain in the distance. The mountain landmark also appears in the work of Albert Bierstadt and Samuel Coleman. Engraving of river and marshes as viewed through circular opening in trees; sailboats on water; mountain cliffs in distance at center; woods in foreground; at bottom center, printed: "Engraved for the Ladies Repository (Cincinnati) by R. Hinshelwood from a picture by S.R. Gifford. N.A. Owned by Richard Butler Esqr. N.Y."; "Rockland.", "(On the Hudson)".
