Sacrificium in Honore PanosEntry/Object ID
MP.94.1167 a-bDescription
A: A print showing the festival of Pan, a nude woman sits reclining holding an incense burner on a chain. A woman behind her places a basket of offerings at the statue of Pan. The statue is armless and shows the torso and head of Pan with drapery at his waist; it is placed on a pillar. A man to the right of the reclining holds a flute to his lips and has vines on him. A young boy to the right kneels with a basket of grapes. Another young child at her feet holds up grapes. A ruin is in the background.
B. Attached note with pin: Sacrifice is honor of Pan. His festivals, called by the Greeks Lyccea, were brought to Italy by Evander, who is said to be the first that introduced the Greek alphabet, and the worship of the Greek deities. These festivals were known at Rome by the name of Lupercalia; from an original painting by Pierre and engraved by L'Empereur.Made/Created
