General Note

Note

One of four Note: It is not clear to whom "S.V.W." refers. By 1856, Irving's sister Sarah Van Wart (1870-1848) was dead. None of her children had the initials "SVW", although daughter-in-laws and one grandaughter did. (None married in the 1850s, however.) Washington Irving died in 1859.
