Description

Not every fisherman along the Hudson was catching fish for sale to the market. Many living along the shoreline turned to the river for sustenance for their families. The fisherman in this image appears to have simply netted some shad, bluefish or bass in the shallows near the Palisades without much equipment. Fishing for sport and pleasure attracted enough interest that John J. Brown, a New York City tackle dealer, published The American Angler's Guide in 1845, the first book-length guide to fishing for amateurs printed in the United States. Colored print of sailboats on Hudson River at Palisades; sand and gravel riverbank in foreground; fisherman, holding net, stands on shore with basket of fish balanced on his head; sailboat at center with one sail lowered, two figures pull rowboat into water at bottom left; cliffs and low mountains in distance; at bottom left, printed: "E. Van Blon."; at bottom right, printed: "J. Hill, Sc."; at bottom center, printed: "SCENERY OF THE HUDSON. N.Y."; at top right, printed: "XV.".
