Serving tray, oblong, with handle holes; painted in colors (gold-yellow predominately) on blackish ground with scene of early steam train and decorative border.
Train consists of locomotive, tender, and two passenger cars. Engine has tall straight stack (then called chimney) at front of large horizontal cylindrical boiler sheathed in wooden boards and topped with steam dome and safety valve. Boiler, with fire doors at rear, and open platform for the engineer, is mounted on four wheels, the larger pair at the front. Tender, on which is located a large top-filled cylindrical water tank, is wagon-like flatcar riding on single truck of four wheels. Passenger car coupled behind tender is tall, with canopy supported by 8 thin uprights over panelled wagon-like body with scalloped side, 3 mounting stirrups, and 3 passenger compartments holding a total of 18 persons. Second car partly obscured by foliage. Train is shown above a stream on high stone trestle with 9 round arches supported by piers with entablature; keystones of arches, and roundels between arches visible. Track on trestle represented as 6 long stringers of varying lengths laid end-to-end on base of stone blocks (strap iron rails would have been placed upon stringers, but are not seen here). Background of building behind train, trees, bushes, etc.
Border appears stencilled, with composite flowers in color, alternating with rather three-dimensional Greek key pattern; pheasant-like bird at each corner, formed by painting area around bird.Made/Created
