The first SHR/HHV "Sheep to Shawl" event was June 12, 1965. The event was called "From Sheep to Shawl" (the title was shortened by the 4th annual festival held in 1968). The first event included many of the activities that became annual features, including demonstrations by The Handweavers Guild of Westchester County. In the mid-1960s Philipsburg Manor was undergoing restoration, meaning the event had to be held at VCM. Evidently sheep were brought to the site for the event, but livestock has not ever been a part of VCM interpretation during the SHR/HHV era. The date of the change in location to PM is unknown.
Note: Despite at least one article stating she attended a "Wool Gathering," Lady Bird Johnson did not visit VCM during a public Sheep to Shawl event; it appears that during her visit to the site in May 23, 1968, many of the demonstrations were done for her by the Guild, but that the public was not in attendance. The Guild presented the First Lady with a handwoven shawl (which was not specifically identified as being woven at VCM). According to local newspaper listings, the public event was held that year in June 8-9.
A report on Sheep to Shawl events and wool processing, including many images (plus the cover image) taken at PM Sheep to Shawl, appeared in Early American Life magazine in April, 2008 [Jessa Krick, 4/24/2020].Note Type
