L.2012.261Description
Marlboro Landing served as one of the major departure points for seasonal fruits from the Hudson River Valley bound for the markets of New York City and beyond. Horse-drawn wagons delivered fruit to the docks, where men loaded the wooden crates onto southbound vessels. Perishable foods usually travelled via steamship in the cooler night air; barges were too slow for the product to reach market before it spoiled. Fruit picked one day and for sale on pushcarts the next morning represented the field-to-table schedule of the late 19th century.
Engraving of crates and workers on covered dock at night: stacks of wood boxes fill foreground; figures at center carry and move boxes; horse-drawn wagons hold additional boxes at center right; figures unload boxes from wagons; river at center and center left; steamboat approaches dock at center left; two sailboats on water; mountains in distance; at bottom center, printed: "NEW YORK.--GROWING AMERICAN INDUSTRIES--SHIPPING GRAPES AT NIGHT, FOR MARKET, AT MARLBORO' LANDING, ON THE HUDSON.--FROM A SKETCH BY OUR SPECIAL ARTIST.--SEE PAGE 121."; at right side, printed (from top): "128", "FRANK LESLIE'S ILLUSTRATED NEWSPAPER.", "[OCTOBER 25, 1879."; text on verso.Made/Created
