SOUVENIR FOLDER OF THE SCENIC STORM KING ROAD, N. Y.Entry/Object ID
L.2012.323Description
This souvenir of the Storm Kind Road was likely printed shortly after the road was completed in 1922. With the rise in popularity of the automobile in the 1910s and 1920s and a growing network of maintained roadways, tourists had a new means of exploring the Hudson River Valley.
The creation of the Storm King Highway, now also known as Route 218, meant a new perspective for visitors on this dramatic landscape. People traveled along it to enjoy the view, although it nearly was a very different experience. Originally planned with a tunnel route through Storm King, the road's path along the steep mountainside was set in part due to increased awareness of land preservation and conservancy. The Palisades Interstate Park Commission championed the environmental protection efforts. This type of printed novelty, which included several postcard views and a map, was ideal for tourists traveling by motorcar as a reminder of the scenic wonders.
