Description

With the Hudson River a major transportation route for goods and travelers, the landings along both the eastern and western shores were full of bustling activity when steamships landed. This view shows the landing at Cornwall-on-Hudson and two men in a quiet moment, perhaps awaiting the ship, alongside their pile of belongings packed in crates and a barrel. Part of a set of stereograph cards showing different views along the river, this card, along with engravings like Shipping Grapes at Night shown nearby, captures a glimpse of work and life along the river in the second half of the 19th century. Two nearly identical photographic prints mounted to yellow card; prints depict two figures on wood pier; wood dock at bottom right; mountain in background across river; photographs printed on single paper sheet and adhered to grey-colored board; photographs are rectangular with arced top; at top left corner, printed: "STODDARD PHOTO." at top center, printed: "CRYSTAL", at top corner right, printed: "GLENS FALLS, N.Y."; verso: at top left, penciled: "Breakneck Mt from Cornwall / 1870-80 / accor to [illegible]".
