Description

Razor strop, in case: rectangular, dark wood (ebony?) slat, with shaped handle; covered on both sides with leather, side marked in gold "TOP" bearing sharpening compound; in open-ended box of red leather, stamped in gold, with floral border; "GEO. WOSTENHOLM & SONS/CELEBRATED I.XL (1.40) RAZOR STROP." On reverse of box, paper label with instructions for use: "Directions for Use.--Lay the Razor flat upon the black side of the Strop, and draw obliquely, five or six times, from the joint-end towards the point; then wipe off the composition which may have adhered to it, and repeat the operation on the white side. This should always be done after shaving, by which the Razor will be wiped dry, and consequently not liable to rust before it is wanted again. In using the razor it should be drawn against the Beard in an oblique direction, exactly opposite that in which it has been stropped; and as much ease in shaving depends upon the Beard being properly softened, it is well to lather the face as long as convenient. Should the Strop become dry or hard, rub it with Oil; and after much using, spread a little more of the Black Paste upon it, which may be procured at 1s. per box."
