Condition

Notes

Remarks: Canvas and frame conserved for Winter Antiques Show; canvas cleaned and re-varnished by Felicity Campbell (see Treatment Report); frame consolidated and areas re-gilded by Marylou Davis (see Treatment Report); some pre-existing separation at corners of frame; overall in very good shape.

Notes

Remarks: Felicity Campbell examined the canvas for possible inclusion in the 2012 Winter Antiques Show Loan Exhibition: the varnish is opaque and very dark; there is a fair amount of dirt; canvas needs new non-acidic backing board; there is something between the canvas and stretcher at bottom edge (Campbell will investigate); cleaning and removing varnish, then re-varnishing will make a big impact; Marylou Davis examined the frame: frame needs a significant amount of work; some areas need to be re-cast; there is split/crack in the left side; also some regilding, some areas should have a high burnish (narrow high flat areas) while others will be softer so there is a bit of contrast; this frame is worth restoring in a more complete process [Jessa J. Krick, 9/8/2011].

Notes

Remarks: Minor cracking overall; possibile accretion (three small, brown circular stains) 3" from left 5 1/2 - 6" from top; frame outer edge upper left corner: crack 9" from top, 3/4 x 1/4" area of loss in egg and dart molding, gilt and gesso tenting; frame with minor cracking overall; other frame losses: minor overall, bead upper right corner, foliate loss upper left corner.

Note

For Visions exhibition, packed in Crate #5. See Documentation tab for notes about the cleaning of this painting (and conservation of the frame) completed prior to the Winter Antiques Show, including the pentimenti revealed by the cleaning. This paiting had been considered to be a "dark and dramatic" view of the site, but that mistaken impression was the result of the dark varnish obscuring the original color pallette of the work.
