Description

a. Painting: View of Sunnyside from the southeast, showing a sand-colored house with bright green shutters and a coral-colored roof, its east gables covered with vines: the river, with three sailboats and a steamboat, is visible through the trees on the left; in the left foreground, on brown dirt path running past the house, a man in a high hat sits on a rustic bench; a nearby dog gazes across a bed of blue and red flowers in the center foreground at two gardeners--one standing, one kneeling--near the house; yellow-tinged cumulus clouds almost fill the sky. b. Frame: Title in plaque on frame, center bottom: "Sunnyside on the Hudson/The Home of Washington Irving"

General Note

Note

Painting is very like the Currier and Ives print "Sunnyside, The Residence of the Late Washington Irving Near Tarrytown, N.Y." It may have been copied from the print, or it may have been the basis for the print. Dog is different in the Currier & Ives print. Another similar print is T. L. Rowbothen's view of Sunnyside, very fine lithography, 1856. Sunnyside and Sweet Owen fine-cut tobacco manufactured by Hoyt, Barbour and Company, Louisville, Kentucky also very like painting but no dog, writing instead; same flower beds. Exhibited at the Museum of the City of New York, 1938: "Currier and Ives and the New York Scene" [source of this note is unknown] The previous note does not refer to the cigar box in the HHV collection [SS.2000.3] which shows no similar flowerbeds, although the cottage is depicted from the same perspective.
