This saber (A) closely resembles the militia light artillery saber of 1810-1840 and the mounted artillery officer's saber of 1872. Broad curved blade, single edge, with a false edge extending back 8 1/2" from the point. Broad shallow fuller begins at the hilt and continues to above 7" from the tip. There are no blade decorations. The grips are wood covered with black leather and wound with twisted gilt wire. The metal parts of the hilt consist of a ferrule at the base of the grips; a backstrap which surmounts the grips and expands to form a covering for the bird's head pommel; a quillon with langets projecting over the blade and a disc finial above the blade; a knuckle bow of the reverse P form, pierced for a sword-knot near the pommel. The scabbard (B) is steel and nickel plated. The sword knot (C) is brown braided leather 21" long.Made/Created
