S. coat of arms; the reverse side is decorated with similar floral designs and trophies and the letters "U.S." The grip is covered with black fish skin and wound with gilded wire. The pommel is a section of an inverted cone decorated with an eagle on the obverse side and a shield on the reverse. A separate cap covers the pommel; it is decorated with leaves and berries. The knuckle-bow is a flattened strip of brass ornamented with a scroll and pierced for a sword knot at the point where it joins the pommel. At the center of the knuckle-bow are further floral decorations. As the bow turns up toward the blade, a branch bears off on the obverse side and joins a kidney-shaped counterguard which is decorated with an eagle and a trophy of flags; There is a hinged guard on the reverse side which is operated with a button and spring. This guard is decorated with a floral wreath, a military trophy and a U. S. shield. The quillon terminates in a simple button finial. B) The scabbard is of nickeled steel with gilded brass mounts consisting of an upper band with two rings, a middle band with one ring and a tip with a drag.
